K-9 Down is a 2-day course for handlers of working dogs in advanced emergency care. The program addresses the unique risks that military, police, and search/rescue canine teams encounter and gives handlers skills to recognize physical distress, stabilize injured animals, and care for their dogs until they can be transported to emergency care.

K-9 Down lectures and laboratories are taught by board certified veterinary specialists from BluePearl Veterinary Partners and North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Lectures include health hazards, physical examination, IV/oxygen/transport, fluid therapy, heat stroke and hypothermia, smoke inhalation, burn wounds, gastric dialation, gunshot wounds and bandaging, poisoning, emergency drugs.

Laboratory sessions include taking vital signs, safe handling, transport techniques, IV catheter placement, endotracheal intubation, bandaging, splinting, tourniquet use, oxygen administration, stomach tube procedures and canine CPR.
